In this concert they are joined by the Konzertchor der Stadt Mannheim, whose
conductor, Lionel Fawcett, will be singing the baritone solo in Vaughan Williams’
beautiful
Five Mystical Songs.

The concert marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Ralph Vaughan Williams
(1872 - 1958). As well as the
Five Mystical Songs it will include the magical Serenade
to Music
, a setting of lines from Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, and Toward the
Unknown Region
, a setting of poetry by the American Walt Whitman which expresses
a mystical awareness of nature and humanity.

The Konzertchor will also be singing works by Mendelssohn and Brahms and
performing a spoken piece called ‘Geographical Fugue’ by Toch.

The concert is accompanied by pianists Anna le Hair, the Aeolian Singers’ rehearsal
accompanist, and Adrian Johnson and is conducted by Stephen Jones, Musical
